Get Your Boat Ready for Summer
By: Jaci Buscher | Date April 26, 2014
With boating season just around the corner many people are starting to prepare their boats for those sunny and relaxing days out on the lake. While getting your boat ready, though, don't forget to also make sure your boat is properly insured. Here are five questions you should ask yourself before you take your boat out for the first time this season:
1. Do I need insurance for my boat? Some people think that their boat is adequately covered by an endorsement onto their homeowner's policy. However, that simply is not true. Many homeowner's policies set limits on the size and value of the boat that they will insure. Furthermore, a separate boat policy provides broader coverage for your boat in the event of an accident.

2. Will my personal property be covered? Life vests, water skis, fishing gear, and inner tubes can carry hefty price tags. That's why it is important to make sure all of your personal belongings are covered by your insurance policy in case of theft.

3. What discounts are available? Many companies will offer multi-policy discounts so you will want to look into what discounts you can get for insuring your boat with the same company who has your auto or home insurance. There may also be discounts for insuring multiple boats, jet skis, and other toys.

4. Is Towing and Assistance available? In the case that your boat breaks down in the water, you don't want to be stranded. Towing and assistance coverage on your boat policy will cover the cost of emergency fixes or the cost to tow your boat to a repair shop. This coverage should also apply to your trailer if it breaks down while towing your boat.

5. Does the type of insurance I get depend on the type of boat I have? A boat policy is pretty standard, but it is important to let your agent know the certain aspects of your boat such as the type, speed, length, value, extra equipment, and frequency of use so that they can ensure that you get the necessary coverages.
